Reasons why you should read Swindle
It is an interesting twist on the normal "Mission Impossible" style break-in, because there are kids involved. In fact, the group of bandits is all kids. It's intense all the way to the end, and you could never expect what happens. It's a story of sadness ("It was thanks to the SmartPick that his parents were in the kitchen right now tearing their hair over some bill they didn't have enough money to pay for. Their raised voices carried all through the house. Bickering, agonizing- sell A to pay for B, cut corners, spend less, economize, economize, economize. And the worst part about it was that there was absolutely nothing Griffin could do about it. Here he was, The Man with the Plan, and he might as well have been a blob of Play-Doh for all he could help his family" (30-31)). motivation, action, adventure, and perseverance. Griffin and Ben try a first time with Savannah, and it wasn't planned very well. The second time they gathered 4 more people and planned much better, and it didn't end with failure. This shows that the kids had to be very perseverant.
This book will take the reader on a journey. In the beginning, the reader might think that Griffin and Ben are stupid ("'It's morning! They're tearing down the building!' Griffin popped up like a champagne cork. 'Let's get out of here!', he cried. The two scrambled for the window. The entire house was vibrating with the clamorous thrum of the crane." (18)), and pretty soon, the reader may start rooting for them. When they fail the first time ("I never thought I could write off an innocent animal. But I have to admit it-this dog is beyond my reach." (75), the reader might think that they are stupid to not think of all the variables, but when they try again, the reader will probably, admire the amount of preparation that went into this plan. The end will shock you, and you will definitely want to read the sequels. There are 5 books in total.
I love this book because Gordon Korman is always a great author, and here he outdid himself. This is a very entertaining book, and it shows how much a few kids could do, if they truly wanted to. Griffin wanted, with all his might, to help his parents' financial problem, and when he finds the Babe Ruth Card, "the tantalizing image would not let go of him-his family's financial problems over, no more dark circles under his parents' eyes from staying up half the night, trying to squeeze money out of a bank account that had none to give...." (16).
